Some folks may think Word's first line indent is perfectly sensible but we do not. If you adjust the first line and/or left indents with the tools on the ruler it is simple and visually direct.
If you try to adjust these indents using the Paragraph dialog box confusion ensues. Word considers the indents relative to which indent is furthest to the left (first line or body). The indent shown in the first figure is .5" left and .5" first line in the dialog box. Why not just specify the first line as 1" and be done with it. The "Special" label is also odd and does not help users unfamiliar with this option.
When a hanging indent is specified, the options seem even more confusing. Note in the figure that the hanging indent is .5" and the left is .5". In this case the first line should be simply .5" and the left indent should be 1".
In fact on the Page Layout ribbon in Word the left indent is shown as 1". Even Word is not consistent in what it thinks the left indent is.Word should just have a left indent, a right indent, and a first line indent. I think everyone would understand these options.
